Homeland representations.
Carrie- she is an agent who we are first introduced to when her mission is to get information out of Ibrahim, who is in a prison waiting to be executed. Carrie is seen as the main character/protagonist, we can also see that she authority but that she also must answer to David. Carrie challenges the stereotype of a female in a thriller programme as she is very independent, tough and aggressive. we as an audience do not look at her as a sex object but as a character of significance. Carrie is also shown to be rebellious against the authority figures such as David and Saul, an example of this is when she places Broady under surveillance. we later learn that Carrie has psychological problems this makes us as an audience question everything we thought about Carrie up until this point and wether or not she is indeed right about Broady.

Nicholas Broady- his character is an american soilder who was captured by the talliban and was tortured whilst captured, he is discovered 8 years later and is seen as a hero by some but Carrie questions this and believes he is now a terrorist working for Adma Izhir. due to the conflict of opinions on Broady we as an audience are unsure on what to believe about his character. In the sex scene with his wife Jessica; Broady is first shown as weak and easily frightened but when the sex comences he changes to borderline aggressive. also this sex scene in comparison to Jessicas sex scene with her new boyfiend is more awkward as a viewer to watch as both do not seem to be enjoying the experience.

David- is the CIA deputy director and is a character with a lot of authority. when we first meet him he is having a disagreement with Carrie about the situation with Ibrahim. we later learn that the reason there is tension between David and Carrie is because he believes she is the reason his marriage is over and she is why he is only able to see his daughter once a week. David challenges the stereotype as he is a successful and well respected black man, where as stereotypically it would be a white person in his position of authority.

Jessica- she is Broadys wife and is the stereotypical female. this is evident from the first time we see her, it is a sex scene with Broady's best friend then we see her in a sex scene with Broady. we as an audience identify her as a sexaul object. also Jessica dresses in a provokative way unlike the other main female character Carrie who we rarely see in that type of attire.

  1. You must show that you understand how these representations are created. You said that we "do not look at her [Carrie] as a sex object" but you dont give any examples to explain why you think this.

    Better Brody example, well done.

Explain the points you make in more detail - what is a 'stereotypical female' and why does Jessica fit that description? Use examples to illustrate your points.
