Homeland representations.
Carrie- she is an agent who we are first introduced to when her mission is to get information out of Ibrahim, who is in a prison waiting to be executed. Carrie is seen as the main character/protagonist, we can also see that she authority but that she also must answer to David. Carrie challenges the stereotype of a female in a thriller programme as she is very independent, tough and aggressive. we as an audience do not look at her as a sex object but as a character of significance. Carrie is also shown to be rebellious against the authority figures such as David and Saul, an example of this is when she places Broady under surveillance. we later learn that Carrie has psychological problems this makes us as an audience question everything we thought about Carrie up until this point and wether or not she is indeed right about Broady.

Nicholas Broady- his character is an american soilder who was captured by the talliban and was tortured whilst captured, he is discovered 8 years later and is seen as a hero by some but Carrie questions this and believes he is now a terrorist working for Adma Izhir. due to the conflict of opinions on Broady we as an audience are unsure on what to believe about his character. In the sex scene with his wife Jessica; Broady is first shown as weak and easily frightened but when the sex comences he changes to borderline aggressive. also this sex scene in comparison to Jessicas sex scene with her new boyfiend is more awkward as a viewer to watch as both do not seem to be enjoying the experience.

David- is the CIA deputy director and is a character with a lot of authority. when we first meet him he is having a disagreement with Carrie about the situation with Ibrahim. we later learn that the reason there is tension between David and Carrie is because he believes she is the reason his marriage is over and she is why he is only able to see his daughter once a week. David challenges the stereotype as he is a successful and well respected black man, where as stereotypically it would be a white person in his position of authority.

Jessica- she is Broadys wife and is the stereotypical female. this is evident from the first time we see her, it is a sex scene with Broady's best friend then we see her in a sex scene with Broady. we as an audience identify her as a sexaul object. also Jessica dresses in a provokative way unlike the other main female character Carrie who we rarely see in that type of attire.

exam question

Saga magazine, on the front cover of Saga magazine there is an image of Michael Caine an elderly actor. The image of Michael Caine is an important one as it is the first thing the audience will notice, and its job is to attract the audience. This is possible with the use of Michael Caine as he is a famous and well established actor, this means that people who may not usually purchase saga may do because they are fans of Michael Caine and his films.
The audience can also identify that there will be an interview inside the magazine featuring Michael Caine, because they show a quote from his interview on the cover.
De to the colour of the background being plain white it means that the audience primarily focuses on Michael Caine and not on what is going on behind him

Along the top of the magazine they have wrote that Saga is the UK's bestselling monthly magazine, the statement is a fact which lets people know that the magazine is already a successful one. There is also a website address present on the cover which shows that Saga magazine also has a website like many other magazines and news papers such as the Sun.
The layout of the magazine cover seems like it is all centred around Michael Caine.
all of the articles on the cover suggest that the magazine focuses on elderly people i.e Ageism and the BBC, however although the primary audience appears to be an older one the magazine is also targeted at a younger audience as well.
The language used isn't advanced and would mean that the magazine would be targeted at a large range of  audience from different social classes.

GQ magazine, on the front cover there is an image of Clint Eastwood as on the Saga magazine this image of  Clint Eastwood is the first thing that the audience will notice and is used to attract them. Clint Eastwood is a famous and established actor which means that his fans may buy this issue of GQ magazine even if they do not usually purchase the magazine.
The layout of the magazine cover shows that everything is situated around the primary focus who is Clint Eastwood.
the articles in GQ magazine means that you can identify their target audience as primarily males between the age of 20-30, this is evident with the headline "cars, clothes, food, music, gadgets" although women can also be interested in these things they are primarily the thoughts of a modern day male. The reason you can identify that GQ has a younger target audience than Saga is because of its use of language and words such as "badass of the year".
GQ magazine also has a website as well as an iphone app this further extends their Target audience.
GQ magazine also uses basic language which means they are targeted at people from a large range of social classes.
The mode of address for GQ magazine seems a lot more direct than that of Saga magazine, this is shown because Saga magazine features lots of interviews where as although GQ magazine also features interviews it also has articles giving tips targeted at the audience.

media breaking bad

explore representations of issues in breaking bad?
Breaking bad is a T.V series about a middle aged man named Walter, who's wife is having a baby. Walter finds out that he has cancer and that it is terminal, Walter also has a son with dissabilities; Walter JR. After finding out that he has cancer Walter makes many changes and begins to persue a career in the drugs business, this leads to many things going wrong. Due to a strange chain of events Walter ends up killing 2 men.

Walter begins as a stereoypical geeky science teacher, this is emphasised by his clothing which is usually gandad jumpers and slippers, also his car looks like an eco-friendly vehicle which is a geeky car.
Walter is the protagonist and has cancer and begins to live life on the edge this connotes that he has little value of his life. Walter JR has dissabilities and is represented as being dependent; which is a stereotypical view of a dissabled person, and this is shown when Walter JR needs his dad to help him put his jeans on. A group of boys make fun of Walter JR, this connotes that its difficult to be a dissabled person and means that we as the audience will feel empathy for him.

Jessie is an archetype of a drug dealer as he is easily identified as a drug dealer, things such as his car which is the typical drug dealers car also his clothing is also the typical drug dealers choice of clothing.
Walter's brother in law is a DEA officer and is the stereotypical macho man, you get the impression that walter is jealous of his brother in law. Walter is the countertype of a drug dealer as he is a boring middle aged science teacher.

media questions walking dead

suggest 2 ways men and women have been represented in the walking dead.
the men in walking dead represented as being strong and the protectors of the group, the women are all shown as being dependent on the men.

Laurie is a woman who believes she has lost her husband and that she will have to bring up her son on her own. Ric the sherrif who is her husband is in fact a live but in the hospital. Shane who is Rics partner and friend takes on the responsibility to look after Laurie and her son, this leads to them having an affair.
this connotes that Laurie feels the need to have a man too look after her and her son, showing women are dependent on men to survive.

Merl is shown as a stereotypical rascist redneck, he is disliked by the group as he tried to assert his authority on the rest of the group, to emphasise his authority he is shot using a low angled shot.
after he is hit over the head by Ric and is left to die by the group.

sitcoms

sitcoms such as everybody hate's chris, fresh prince of bel air and only fools and horses use characters of ethnic minorities.
In everybody hates chris black people are seperated form white people which is evident because chris is the only black person at his school, this is showing that even up to recently segregation is present in usa.
In only fools and horses denzel is represented as a criminal which is a stereotype of a black people.
In the fresh prince of bel air the black family is a countertype because they are rich and successful.
