ms1 practise question

Suggest ways people have been represented in these 2 adverts?

Well in the KFC advert the man is represented as being mischevious, lazy and as someone who likes fast food. This is shown when he allows his wife to cook while he reads the paper even though she is pregnant, this is a stereotype because it is basically saying that the woman's place is in the kitchen and that she should make the food while the husband does nothing. At the end he is pictured buying a filler from KFC, the woman who sells the filler to him is black which is saying that we expect KFC employees to be black this is a stereotype as well. the reason he is buying food from KFC is because his wife has presumably thrown him out because of the remark he made about her fat arse.

in the fosters advert the two men are stereotypical of  australian men, they are cooking on a BBQ and are drinking fosters. Also their attire is stereotypical as well; they are wearing shorts and flip flops.
The 2 men in the Fosters advert are on a beach which mainly consists of women; which emphasises the fact that they are living the dream from a mans point of view.
The man in london is a very ordinary person who aspires to be more like the 2 Australians; this is why he calls them for advice.

choose one of the advertisements. explore how the representations of men in your chosen advertisement have been used to sell the product?
the man in the KFC advert is used to sell the product to the target audience, which would be men who frequently get in trouble with their wive's and who miss out on dinner. the product is of large preportion so this also suggest it is a man's meal because it is too big for both women and children.
However the man in the advert is used for humour in the advert as well which may mean although the product is mainly targeted at men it may also be targeted at women as well. Also because the man is just an ordinary man so lots of men would relate to him; meaning the product would attract a wider range of people.

media homework

film-harry potter and the chamber of secrets.
In the last scene of the film Harry potter is talking to dumbledore and high key lighting is used, they are discussing the events in the previous scene. After the entrance of Lucius Malfoy the mood changes and so does the lighting from high key to low key. Malfoy is shown in low key lighting this emphasises how evil he is. at one point when he begins to act suspicious his face is almost all in shadow except his eyes.

murder ball question

How are stereotypes used as a shorthand to represent certain groups of people?
Murder ball is a film about a disabled rugby team, taking part in the para-olympics. Stereotypes are made about the people in the wheelchairs. People think that disabled people are depressed and are un-able to live a normal life, however we learn in this film that although that might be the case in the beginning, but once they become used to being disabled they learn to live with it, and some even claim that they would not change anything. some of the disabled people talk about the benefits of being disabled such as women feeling sorry for them which makes it easier for them to get girl friends. They also argue that if they were not disabled they would not be in the olympics and would not have made this film, and all the advantages that come with the film such as being famous and meeting the members of the jackass cast.

analysis of scream

How are cinematic horror conventions challenged in scream?
In the start of scream Drew Barrymore is murdered this is unexpected because she is a established actress who you would expect to be the lead character; and to survive right through until the end. Another way this movie challenges conventions of a horror movie is because is most films you are generally not introduced to the murderer/monster until nearly the end; however there are exceptions to this such as firday the 13th and a nightmare on elm street. the films what appear to show the killer from the start tend to be more about the killer instead of the characters envolved, so the killer takes the role of the lead character.  you are not introduced to the killer until about 8 minutes in, all you hear is his voice on the phone. Throughout the film the killer masks his identity this adds mystery to the film. The movie also has lots of inter textual references such as the stabbing action of the murderer resembles that of the killer in psycho.

media homework

This is a coca cola advert, the advert has a picture of Santa clause drinking a bottle of coke. this advert was obviously created to be released at Christmas time. seeing as though Santa is on the advert you would assume that the target audience is young children.
the brand coca cola is a well known and established product, coca cola never bring out a completely different product to the original coke; however they may introduce sugar free coke or cherry flavoured coke.
